OUR PHILOSOPHY

Vision Statement

Advocating for truth and virtue in education.

Mission Statement

Faith Baptist Academy is a ministry of Faith Baptist Church that strives to glorify God through academic excellence by pursuing the biblical purpose and the biblical pattern of education (Proverbs 1:1-7) in order to develop Christlikeness in its students.

Biblical Purpose of Education

“To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion” Proverbs 1:2-4.

The purpose of biblical education is not to prepare students for colleges or careers, nor is it to conform them to a particular pattern of living. Although those outcomes often occur, they are not the goal. The purpose of biblical education is to equip students with the mental disciplines and moral virtues needed to pursue truth and live wisely.

Biblical Pattern of Education

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” Proverbs 1:7a.

When education is divorced from God's revelation, it tends to stagnate. Academic excellence is more easily attainable when it is subject to and guided by God’s Word. People are more inclined to pursue truth when they are motivated by a desire to know God, understand His ways, and live accordingly. Once a biblical worldview is established as the basis for education, a biblical pattern for instruction can begin. We believe the biblical pattern of instruction is first knowledge, then understanding, then wisdom.

Knowledge is the taking in of information. Students are taught how to receive information. This is the primary focus for elementary students. This is why we prioritize the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Understanding is the mental processing of information that leads to logical conclusions. As students age, their curriculum includes more instruction on logic and critical thinking. They are taught how to use reason to come to sound conclusions and avoid logical fallacies.

Wisdom is the practical expression of knowledge and understanding. Before a student graduates, they will have been taught how to logically express their ideas, defend their conclusions, and apply their knowledge in both rhetoric and life.

This three-fold pattern of learning is summed up nicely in Psalm 143:5, "I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands."

OUR GOALS

Veritas - Truth

Equipping students with the mental disciplines needed to pursue truth.

GOAL #1 - To train students in the use of the Trivium.

  1. Grammar: The early years of education is dedicated to training students in the fundamental rules of language and communication. Training students in Reading, Writing, Music, and Arithmetic is arduous work, but is made fun by our talented teachers and staff.
  2. Logic: Once the basic rules for language and communication are learned, student's must then learn to analyze and filter what they read and are told in order to extract the truth and dismiss error. In the middle school grades, students take formal logic classes to prepare them to think and speak critically.
  3. Rhetoric: After grammar and logic are learned, FBA shifts the emphasis away from memorizing subject material to analyzing it and producing their own research, opinions, and conclusions. High school students put their learned skills to the test by writing research papers and giving persuasive speeches. The pinnacle of the Rhetoric program is the Senior Thesis-a research paper that the student must produce, present, and defend.

Virtus - Virtue

Equipping students with the moral virtues needed to live wisely.

GOAL #2 - To train students to exhibit the four Cardinal Virtues and the three Christian Virtues.

Cardinal Virtues

  1. Prudentia - Prudence: The prudent seek knowledge and understanding in order to better themselves and their community. Wisdom. Honesty. Humility.
  2. Temperentia - Temperance: The temperate learn to master themselves, coming to an understanding of their own individuality, virtues, and vices, in order to exercise self-control in order to better themselves and their community. Self-control. Patience. Subtilty.
  3. Fortitudo - Fortitude: The courageous do not back down from challenges, they face difficulties, and seek to overcome obstacles that prevent them from being the best version of themselves for their community. Courage. Loyalty. Perseverance.
  4. Justitia - Justice: The just seek the welfare of all, treat everyone with respect, and give others their due. Equity. Judgment. Generosity.

Christian Virtues

  1. πίστις- Faith: Believing in God and His Word to the extent that you are moved to serve Him and obey His commands. Trust. Submission. Action.
  2. ἐλπίς - Hope: Trusting in God's eternal plan and living everyday according to His eternal will. Peace. Foresight. Patience.
  3. ἀγάπη - Charity: Loving others in such a way that your actions are for their benefit rather than your own. Love. Selflessness. Forgiveness.

Individuality and Community

Encouraging students to pursue the likeness of Christ.

GOAL #3 - To promote individuality and responsibility in each student.

The ideal community is made up of people who have individual dreams, aspirations, and minds but whose motives and methods are selfless and community-based. FBA promotes unity, not uniformity, as well as community, not conformity. We do this by first recognizing that every student is a unique soul, created in the image of God. We recognize that a person's character is defined by what they do, but that a person's value is defined by who they are as one of God's children. We believe that every one of God's children are capable of amazing things, but we don't believe that each one will accomplish the same amazing things. As individuals, each student will have different interests, different strengths, different temperaments, and different weaknesses.

FBA does not seek to develop the same strengths and interests in each student, nor does it seek to level every student's weakness and temperament. We believe that by pursuing the universal virtues and disciplines mentioned above, that we are preparing each student to unlock and utilize their own full and unique potential.
